History and description of Forfar

Forfar is an old variety which probably arose in the Netherlands. Introduced to the UK c 1771 by Thomas Harvey of Norwich. Widely grown in Victorian England when it was popular for making Apple Charlotte.

Rather large, round-conical, slightly ribbed fruit. Greenish yellow skin with pale red streaks and some russet patches and dots. Firm, crisp, juicy, yellow flesh. Rich sweet aromatic flavour. Keeps shape when cooked or produces a stiff puree. A moderately vigorous, spreading tree. Hardy and heavy cropping.
