History and description of Belgian Purple

Belgian Purple plum is an old Belgian variety first catalogued in 1853 and first introduced to the UK by Rivers.

Medium large, round-oblong fruit. Blue-black skin with a heavy bloom. Firm, juicy almost crisp greenish flesh. Semi-clinging stone. Sweet with good flavour as a dessert plum. Excellent colour for jam making and stewing.

Moderately vigorous tree. Fairly good cropping. There are varied reports on fertility varying from self-sterile to almost self-fertile.
