History and description of Cherry Plum

The Cherry Plums or Myrobalans are an ancient group of fruit closely related to the wild ancestors of the modern domesticated plum. They are believed to have originated from the Near East but have been grown in Europe at least since the 16th Century.

Small, oval, scarlet red fruit. Sweet, juicy yellow flesh. Pleasant to eat fresh although quite small. Can be used for jams.

Vigorous, spreading tree with thin twiggy branches. Leaves are much smaller and lighter in colour than plum leaves. Very attractive white blossom produced very early before most other fruit trees. Light cropping in the UK because of the very early blossom.
