History and description of Clapps Favourite

Raised by Thaddeus Clapp, Dorchester, Massacheusetts, USA before 1860. Grown commercially in the USA and UK in the past.

Medium sized, long pyriform fruit. Smooth, pale yellow skin. Bright scarlet flush and stripes. Very little russetting. Pale yellow, crisp, juicy flesh. Pleasant and sweet with a hint of acidity but of only moderate flavour. A fair dessert variety but also good for cooking. Fruit is prone to rot from the core if left on the tree for too long.

Moderately vigorous tree with a drooping habit. Prolific cropper.
