History and description of Cambridge Gage

Cambridge Gage is believed to have originated from a Greengage seedling from the Cambridge area. It was first adopted and grown commercially by Chivers & Son, Histon, Cambridgeshire, UK who sent it to the National Fruit Trials in 1927. This variety is now favoured as a commercially grown greengage because it crops more reliably.

Medium sized, round fruit. Green skin with a heavy bloom. Yellow flesh with an excellent rich flavour. Good as a dessert plum or for jam making. Fruit is prone to cracking. It is virtually indistinguishable from the old greengage in most respects.

Compact hardy tree. A very regular cropper but with moderate yields. Can be propagated on its own root and was once used as a rootstock in its native region.
