History and description of Ontario

Ontario plum was raised by Ellwanger and Barry, Rochester, New York, USA and first described 1874. Was grown commercially in the UK and elsewhere in Europe.

Medium large, round-oval fruit. Greenish yellow, bloomy skin giving the appearance of a very large greengage. Soft golden yellow flesh. Sometime a little fiberous. Good flavour as a dessert variety. Bruises easily.

Upright, spreading tree. Hardy and self-fertile Fair cropping. Susceptible to bacterial canker and brown rot but resistant to plum rust
