History and description of Jumbo

Jumbo is a new variety bred by Hugh Ermen from a cross between Charles Ross and Jonathan. Very large fruit. Flushed and striped red on pale green background with a deep red flush and attractive red flecks. Golden cream flesh. Good storage until March. Jumbo is a dual purpose apple but is particularly good for baking as it retains its colour. For eating fresh it has a good acidic aromatic flavour. Cropping is heavy and early trials have shown good disease resistance. It is a triploid and as such fairly vigorous and also unsuitable as a pollinator.
